The symbolism of time

Italian version

Transits of the Sun

Transits of the Sun do not give a precise definition to events; instead, they are used to date the moment of an event signalled by the transit of a slow or semi-slow planet. The meaning is more marked if there is an aspect of the same type in the natal horoscope.

Transits of the Moon

The Moon takes approximately two and a half days to travel a zodiac sign. Due to its rapid pace, interpreting its movements can be challenging. However, in certain situations, utilising this celestial body for interpretative purposes may be justified. Symbolically, the Moon is associated with change and can often be found near significant configurations formed by the transits of slow or semi-slow planets, as well as in conjunction with the angles of a chart when an event is triggered. The Moon is known to cause mood changes and fleeting sensations and interacts with dream states and atmospheres linked to daily experiences and sentimental encounters. Its effects can go unnoticed or translate into internal states that cannot be directly perceived.

In some cases, individuals particularly attuned to lunar symbolism may experience hypersensitivity to certain monthly cyclical situations during the transit of the luminary. Certain psychiatric disorders have been observed to manifest during specific lunar configurations. Additionally, the well-known connection between the female menstrual and lunar cycles adds further weight to the importance of the Moon in transits.

The significance of eclipses and lunar phase changes that occur on specific birth chart points is a topic of interest for some authors. However, establishing the validity of this assumption is challenging since, in most cases, critical life events are also marked by other factors, such as the transits of slow planets. Eclipses correspond to a triple conjunction of the Sun, Moon, and Lunar Node. In traditional astrology, the axis of the Nodes, originating from the intersection between the ecliptic and the lunar orbit, represents the internal conflicts that must be resolved to access the meaning of one’s destiny. It can be inferred that the formation of an eclipse on a point in the birth chart unleashes the deep, hidden impulses expressed by the psychic node connected to planetary symbolism. This event is totalitarian and profoundly involving, prolonging its effects beyond the time of formation of the aspect.

Transits of Mercury

The destiny influences of Mercury’s transits are not always significant; in common with all fast planets, its primary role is to signal the date of an event caused by the transit of slow planets. However, it is less effective than the Sun in this regard. Mercury, a planet located inside the orbit of Earth, represents the intellectual and communicative aspects of human experience. As a result, it conveys events through specific symbolic contributions, including short trips and movements, interhuman relationships, visits, telephone calls, writings, exchanges, and trades. The effect of a transit is more pronounced if Mercury forms a loop over a transit location.

Transits of Venus

The transits of Venus do not have significant influences on destiny. As with all fast planets, it signals the date of an event caused by the transit of slow planets, but in this regard, it is less effective than the Sun. The attractive nature of Venus generally leads to an accommodation of the circumstances represented by the natal planet. There is no coercion or active impulse in the Venusian expression, but rather a search for harmony and a point of balance between multiple instances. This tendency to bring them together organically is often observed in relationships and loving manifestations. However, on the negative side, the transit can develop a propensity towards hedonism and self-satisfaction. It is worth noting that transit loops show more noticeable effects, similar to those observed with Mercury.

Transits of Mars

Mars, the first planet beyond Earth’s orbit, holds great significance in the horoscopic chart, reflecting the tension that an individual can express towards oneself or the surrounding environment. Mars traditionally represents action and energy, which can be positive or critical, such as violence, aggression, or destructive tendencies. The positivity of Martian action is often associated with strength and harmony manifesting in the birth chart’s domiciles and aspects of Mars.

The transit of Mars increases tension and energy in the house of transit and the transited planet, and it helps to realise and implement the potentials expressed by the transit of slow planets.

Transits of Jupiter

Jupiter is widely acknowledged as the ‘Greater Benefic’, responsible for the bestowal of favourable and fortunate events. In reality, its influence can be categorised into two distinct forms: an expansive power, primarily associated with its domicile in the sign of Pisces, and an organic growth, governed by the Sagittarian diurnal domicile. The latter serves to channel the Jovian expansion under the guidance of a well-defined idea or project, resulting in coordinated and systematic growth. The practical implications of Jupiter’s transit are manifold and range from the intensification of religious and spiritual ideals and aspirations to legal issues and from material growth to the pathological growth of organic dysfunctions. In general, favourable transits signify healthy growth, whereas adverse transits can lead to excessive and reckless development, even physically. The magnitude of the effect produced by the Jovian transit is inversely proportional to its speed.

Transits of Saturn

Saturn represents the structural apparatus that supports our relationships with the world. As such, it is responsible for morality, obligations, trials, and duties of existence. Saturn’s transits are significant and have a lasting impact on individuals. When one is ready to take on their responsibilities, the transit of Saturn further stabilises the individual and creates a sense of awareness that leads to achieving set goals. Alternatively, even harmonious transits can cause moments of intolerance and depression, especially if the natal position of Saturn is critical. Saturn transits are known for their delayed effect, which mirrors the meanings of density and crystallisation, and the impact of the transit is released in its final phase and remains for some time, even though the transit is no longer taking place.

Transits of Uranus

In contrast to the Saturn transits, characterised by a debilitating impact, the Uranus transits indicate stimulating phases marked by unexpected, impulsive, and original events and incidents, with intense stress even during harmonious transits. Uranian symbolism refers to the opening of perceptual states that are not typically utilised due to various forms of conditioning. Uranus’s most striking effect is placing the individual in front of a universal, cosmic context, which can result in inventive growth, originality, utopian idealism, opportunistic individualism, and, ultimately, reaching an event that appears entirely determined by Fate.

Cycles of Uranus

Sextile

The sextile transit occurs twice in a lifespan, typically at around 14 and 70 years of age. The separating transit serves as a precursor to adolescent experiences, during which one discovers a vast world of potential beyond the familial purview. The applying transit involves a detachment and relaxation towards the obligations that have conditioned one’s existence, enabling an openness to inner realities.

Square

Square transit typically occurs around the ages of 20 and 60. Separating transit is a prelude to social challenges and rebellions against authority and educational models. The applying transit accentuates the crisis of prospects that occurs on the old age threshold.

Trine

Trine transits are typically occurring around the ages of 28 and 56. The separating transit that precedes the first Saturn cycle signifies the changes required to establish autonomy, which will be accompanied by a sense of responsibility as the Saturn cycle nears completion. The subsequent applying transit involves reflecting on one’s work to assess its validity and deciding whether significant changes are necessary.

Opposition

The opposition transit, which typically occurs around the age of 42, marks the so-called “mid-life crisis”. During this period, individuals are confronted with the realisation that their youth has passed and their old age is approaching, generating a sense of anxiety and the desire to pursue new experiences before the inexorable law of time slows down their progress.

Conjunction

The conjunction transit occurs only once in a lifetime, typically around 84 years of age, unless there is a retrograde motion; in that case, it could represent an agitated childhood upset by sudden events. The direct transit of Uranus is a philosophical preparation to embrace a universe that is no longer limited by our bodily form and results in the abandonment of material tasks. While this transit allows us to broaden our perspectives, it may also fuel fear and uncertainty about the senescence condition.

Transits of Neptune

The interpretation of Neptune’s transits is a challenging task due to the planet’s intrinsic symbolism. These transits are not directly under the control of consciousness and do not provide a clear outline that allows for a precise definition of a Neptunian event. Despite this, the direct transit and the aspects with the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant are significant, and even recurring transit configurations that repeat aspects already present at birth seem to have noticeable effects.

The influence of Neptune’s transits varies widely, ranging from altruistic flights and collective inspirations that leave little room for personal considerations to states of confusion, existential uncertainty, and deprivation of the sense of reality, depending on the individual’s degree of evolution. Both extremes fall within the dissolving symbolism of Neptun’s work, which compares the order offered by the conscious vision of the solar eye with the perspective of the void, the chaotic principle that precedes the ordering imposed by the logos.

Cycles of Neptune

With Uranus

In a positive sense, this transit represents the emergence of potential psychic abilities, the perception of an alternative reality, and an enlightened approach to social reform. The cyclical aspect of the conjunction with Uranus is present in individuals born in 1993. For those born between 2025 and 2027, the square aspect will present itself, which may lead to intense suggestions and evaluation errors.

With Neptune

The conjunction transit only occurs in cases of retrogradation at birth. In such circumstances, it may lead to inadequate states of organic defence. The sextile usually coincides with the first Saturnian cycle, which inspires us to adopt a broader perspective on life. The square aspect coincides with the 42-year Uranian hemicycle, which brings up fears and uncertainties during the mid-life crisis. The trine occurs at approximately 55 years of age. It is characterised by a greater sense of solidarity towards others or a phase of psychic relaxation that enables one to approach more philosophical styles of thought. Lastly, the opposition arises at around 82-84 years of age and coincides with completing the Uranian cycle. It has much in common with the latter, proposing a blurring of distinctions, a confusion of consciousness and unconscious, and other similar phenomena.

With Pluto

The conjunction aspect, which last occurred in 1890, is symbolically associated with the spread of uncontrolled creative processes or a profound inner transformation reflected in society’s ideals and life goals. The sextile, active for individuals born between 1945 and 1993, will recur approximately between 2025 and 2034. This aspect liberates people, sometimes abruptly, from the burden of erroneous conceptions and represents the emergence of profound experiences or waning interest in material things. The square, trine, and opposition of Neptune with Pluto do not apply to the current generation and will form in approximately 2061, 2100, and 2300, respectively.

Transits of Pluto

Pluto’s transits express the powerful forces of renewal and transformation, symbolic of the primordial instinct that governs vital manifestation. Its expressive range is broad, but its defining feature is to operate between the poles of destruction and subsequent reintegration or rebirth. It is incumbent upon individuals to seize the opportunity to recover after the Plutonian energies have swept away the remnants of previous vital expressions. Without doing so, the inner strength becomes depleted and fragmented, which can lead to psychophysical risks. Pluto’s transformations are inevitable, and opposing them can have disastrous effects. It regulates ego changes, degenerative diseases, inner creativity, healing energies, subversion, hidden treasures, and death.

Cycles of Pluto

It is important to note that the cycles of Pluto are subject to high variability due to its orbital eccentricity, which is higher than that of other planets, and its retrogradation cycles. While the average duration of transit over a zodiac sign is around 20 years, the passage over the sign of Cancer from 1913 to 1938 lasted 25 years, while the planet took only 12 years to transit over the sign of Sagittarius from 1996 to 2008. Consequently, associating a specific age range with Pluto transit cycles may be misleading. Nonetheless, it is possible to infer that generations subject to Pluto’s short cycles mature more quickly, while those subject to the long cycle require more time to activate transformation energies. This phenomenon can also be interpreted in terms of historical circumstances, demonstrating a greater or lesser degree of resistance to change or a possible radicalisation of social demands.

Conjunction

The cycle of conjunction of Pluto completes approximately every 248 years. If the planet is retrograde during birth, the reappearance of the aspect may result in a reorientation of vital parameters during childhood.

Sextile

The sextile cycle of Pluto represents the initial awareness of one’s energy in the social sphere and the first attempts to interact with the environment on a more pronounced level.

Square

The square cycle of Pluto often signifies a loss of personal direction or detachment from the goals of one’s reference generation. This can be likened to realising that one has grown up and must make profound changes to move forward.

Trine

The formation of the trine cycle of Pluto marks a significant turning point in the transformational experiences of the past years. If eliminating non-essential elements in your life has been successful during the square transit, this aspect represents a period of productivity. However, if the choices made have not been fruitful, it is advisable to reconsider them and make necessary changes without hesitation.

Opposition

At the age of 84, when the opposition cycle of Pluto occurs (for instance, for individuals born between 1950-1960), the creative impulse takes a subtle or spiritual form, and one begins to pursue goals that transcend mundane expectations. This desire for liberation from temporary tasks is amplified when coinciding with the Uranian cycle. Nevertheless, a remarkable vitality persists. However, if one has squandered their energy throughout life, this phase can manifest as physical and vital decline, indicating a negative outcome.
