This exercise serves as both a continuation of the previous ones and a preparation for the next activity in the physical series: mediumistic writing. By using a finger instead of a pendulum or planchette, this approach simplifies the process of asking yes-or-no questions in public settings, such as outdoors, at a party, or in any other situation where discretion is essential.

The finger preparation follows the instructions already provided for externalising the spiritual hand; in this case, only the spiritual finger is externalised, always accessing the depth point. With refinement from previous exercises, this preparation should only take a few minutes. The index finger is usually the preferred choice for this practice. However, if it lacks flexibility for any reason, you are free to use whichever finger you feel most comfortable with.

Once you have prepared the finger and invited the spiritual guide, you will ask them to raise their finger as follows: raise it once for “no,” twice for “maybe,” and three times for “yes.” To make the request, hold your hand outward, resting it to one side; for added privacy, you can keep your hand in a pocket.

Maintaining control of a meditative state while interacting with others, being in crowds, or dealing with the noise of outdoor environments can be challenging. Preparation for meditation requires a careful balance, which you best achieve when distractions—both internal and external—are minimised. During the initial stages of learning, it is essential to experience calm and isolation. However, at some point, practitioners must learn to adapt to the influences of the outside world. Distraction then becomes a testing ground for practice, as both stillness and agitation are aspects of existence. Therefore, practitioners need to consider this and be prepared to operate under any circumstances.
