From the past to the future

The lunar nodes, known as the Head and Tail of the Dragon or Axis of the Dragon (Caput and Cauda Draconis) in astrology, are fictitious points positioned 180° apart that arise from the intersection of the ecliptic and the lunar orbit. These nodes have been known since ancient times and are also present in Indian astrology, where they are referred to as Rāhu and Ketu. The lunar nodes are utilised in the West, especially concerning their karmic significance. However, outside of this context, they have seldom obtained the interpretive attention that other fictitious or otherwise points in the horoscope have received.
The lunar nodes in astronomy
The Moon follows a path that takes it across a node approximately every 27 days, a period known as the draconic month. When watched from an Earth-based observatory in the northern hemisphere, this line of nodes moves in a retrograde (counterclockwise) direction westward along the ecliptic at a rate of roughly 19.3° per year, with a periodicity of 18.6 years. This retrograde motion can be attributed to the precessional motion of the lunar orbit’s plane [1]. The node is referred to as ascending when the orbit progresses from south to north of the ecliptic and descending when it moves from north to south.
The lunar nodes play a direct role in the occurrence of eclipses (from the Greek ἔκλειψις, disappearance). When the full Moon approaches a lunar node, a lunar eclipse ensues – the Moon enters the Earth’s shadow cone, resulting in its darkening. A lunar eclipse can manifest as total, partial, or penumbral. Conversely, when the new Moon approaches the nodes, a solar eclipse takes place, which can be either total, annular, or partial – the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, causing the latter to be obscured. While a lunar eclipse can be observed from the entire night hemisphere, a solar eclipse is only visible from a limited area. Usually, a solar eclipse occurs every 18 months, although total eclipses arise infrequently; partial or total lunar eclipses occur approximately every six months.
The lunar nodes in the myths of humanity
The astronomical phenomenon of the axis of the lunar nodes that “devour” solar energy during eclipses has been a recurring element in numerous beliefs throughout human history. Among the most widely recognised entities are Rāhu and Ketu from post-Vedic mythology and Indian astrology. According to the Puranic texts, [2] there exists a legendary account of a time far removed when Devas and Asuras, gods and demigods or titans, extracted the amṛta, an elixir of immortality, from the Ocean of Milk. This elixir was intended solely for the Devas, but Svarbhānu, one of the Asuras, managed to drink it and, thus, became immortal. Sūrya and Chandra, the Sun and the Moon, bore witness to this event and promptly notified Mohinī, a female avatāra of Viṣṇu. Mohinī swiftly decapitated Svarbhānu, but he continued to exist owing to having already obtained immortality; as a result, his head and body became separate entities, known thereafter as Rāhu and Ketu.
According to Norse mythology, Sköll and Hati are wolves who relentlessly pursue Sol and Mani, the Sun and the Moon, intending to devour them. The former is known as “the one who challenges,” while the latter is referred to as “the one who hates.” At the end of time, during the cataclysmic event known as Ragnarok, Sköll and Hati ultimately annihilated the celestial bodies. This resulted in the collapse of the heavens and the earth, leading to the gods’ demise.
In the astrological manuscripts of the Middle Ages in the Arab world, there is a reference to a pseudo-planet named al-Tinnin, which signifies the Dragon. Upon breaking into two halves, this pseudo-planet forms the axis of the lunar nodes, also known as the Head and Tail of the Dragon. It is believed that the Latin term for the lunar nodes originated from one of the earliest Arabic texts translated into Europe, the Introductorium in Astronomiam, authored by Albumasar.
The examples presented herein serve as symbols of the astronomical reality of both lunar nodes. However, throughout history, eclipses, particularly solar ones, have been interpreted as bearers of misfortune and worry, as a symbol of a demon that feeds on light. The deity Apep, often mentioned in the Egyptian chronicles of the New Kingdom, is known to govern darkness and disorder, serving as an opposing force to Ra, the Sun. Every day, Apep must depart from the mortal realm and lie in the underworld, only to reappear at sunset in the daily battle between the kingdoms of light and darkness. Ra, after his stay in the nocturnal world, always returns as a victor, except upon the occurrence of an eclipse, where the god is temporarily devoured. In China, the evil spirit that eats the Moon during eclipses is represented by a large black dog-like creature, the Tiangou, while an invisible dragon devours the Sun. In Vietnam, the serpent is replaced by a giant frog, and for some Native American peoples, it is a bear that bites the Sun and Moon during eclipses.
In Greco-Roman mythology, the association of the lunar nodes with the dragon or serpent, known as Caput and Cauda Draconis, may not be immediately apparent. The constellation Draco, as mentioned in Ptolemy’s Almagest, was identified with the dragon Ladon, the guardian of the garden of the Hesperides, who was later enshrined among the stars by Zeus. However, the symbolism that most closely reflects solar events is associated with Phyton, the earthly dragon of Delphi, who was Apollo’s nemesis and met his end at the hands of the same deity. Concerning eclipses, the Greeks imagined that when the sun suddenly vanished from sight, Helios sought the help of Theia, the goddess of light and daughter of Uranus and Gaea, to defeat Erebus, the god of darkness and shadows, who was the son of Chaos.
The symbolic meaning of the lunar nodes
As part of a single axis, the lunar nodes should be comprehended as a unified entity that embodies a dual aspect, similar to the reading of houses and astrological signs. Each zodiac sign and sector of the horoscope has a corresponding aspect that balances the forces in play. The concept of individuality of the first House would be insubstantial without the potential of a relationship expressed by the seventh House. Likewise, the zodiac sign of Taurus, a natural manifestation of the earth’s fruitful potential, requires the opposite sign of Scorpio to transmute vital residues into new sap for the next cycle of vegetation. It is essential to interpret this symbolism by assigning complementary meanings that give individuals a driving force for their advancement.
The knot is a symbolic representation of the convergence and concentration of energies. In the context of lunar nodes, these energies are of a virtual nature, wherein physical bodies play no role. However, their potential is revealed during eclipses under specific celestial conditions. The lunar nodes, being the intersection between the lunar orbit and the ecliptic plane, establish a close relationship between the Sun, Moon, and Earth. In a sense, they represent the relationship of the luminaries with our planet. In their spiritual and subtle meaning, they are akin to two beacons of etheric light, where the solar head of the dragon acts as a guide to our future aspirations, while the lunar tail symbolises the now metabolised experiences that serve as memories or reflections of the past.
The occurrence of eclipses underscores the dramatic relationship between light and darkness. The sudden fading and disappearance of light during daylight hours, which is typically associated with a state of wakefulness, is a moment that transports us back to a state of chaos and undifferentiated existence that predates the order imposed by the logos or intellect. Darkness becomes the witness of matter devoid of guidance and meaning, and our vision is suddenly lost. This state of unconsciousness takes over, and the past returns. The Dragon archetype, in particular, brings to the fore the instinctive and amoral aspects that dwell deep within us, while the “shadow,” as Jung described it, takes precedence. The shadow is a dark alter ego that embodies the removed aspects of our conscious personality. Even the normal state of deep sleep is associated with the symbolism of darkness and night, the key difference being that the physical and objective experiences during sleep are severed.
A lunar eclipse, on the other hand, reduces the Moon’s reflected light. During this celestial event, the Earth, which hosts the manifestation of solar consciousness, casts a shadow over one’s past experiences, giving rise to emotions of loss, detachment from one’s roots, and disillusionment. The lunar eclipse may be interpreted as a reality check, necessitating a certain level of maturity to be experienced without causing psychological distress.

The glyph of the lunar nodes bears a strong resemblance to two vases. The inverted vase represents the north node, which is evocative of a head and symbolises a directional, evolutionary, and finalistic principle – the destiny we are drawn to. On the other hand, the straight vase of the south node is well-suited for containing, collecting, and preserving the experiences and impressions amassed throughout a lifetime. However, while this contributes to ensuring a certain sense of security resulting from habit, it also results in a tendency towards stagnation and a fixation on past constructs, which may hinder progress.
The interpretation of the lunar nodes
The interpretation of lunar nodes often pertains to their role as carriers of a karmic destiny and as predictors of the future evolution of this destiny. Unfortunately, the precise meaning of the term is not always clear. Karma, the action followed by the resulting fruit (karmaphala), returns to the performer in the present or a subsequent life. Good deeds ensure a happy rebirth, while evil deeds promise future punishment. This mechanism is relatively automatic. However, it is essential to recognise that the current individual is merely an expression of our superior self, who, owing to their evolutionary experience, “dresses” in the most suitable personality for the path they must follow. Rather than scanning the skeletons of past lives with longing and curiosity, we should interpret the information presented to us via the lunar nodes as indicators of the way forward – or things to avoid – to behave in the best possible way in our present life. Nonetheless, the insights provided can be easily interpreted from a karmic standpoint.

The most fulfilling and desirable experiences stem from relationships, be they emotional or professional, where a sense of belonging to a group fosters a feeling of ease in shouldering responsibilities. However, the tendency to seek balance at all costs and to submit to authority may lead to a general suppression of initiative. Present life suggests a path characterised by self-sufficiency and independence, which can foster a strong personality capable of overcoming prejudices and venturing towards the future with a sense of challenge and courageous determination.

Getting rid of an unedifying, if not openly destructive, past to begin anew. This destiny necessitates the liberation from feelings of guilt for prior actions, although it may prove challenging to avoid falling back into negative patterns. Therefore, The primary objective is to establish new foundations built upon the remnants of past experiences, focusing on achieving economic and financial security. However, it is paramount to defend the environment and the work of nature. It is crucial to prevent the distressing impact of past experiences and to silence any lingering ghosts.

The lifestyle that embraces the natural and untamed freedom of the prairies, the desire for unbounded travel, and the freedom to live according to one’s ideals without being held accountable to anyone are the hallmarks of this individual’s disposition. The enthusiasm for open spaces and adventure, albeit an end in itself, is not conducive to stable and enduring relationships or a settled life. Consequently, destiny will lead towards developing effective communication, particularly verbal communication, to translate their ideas into words that can become a voice for others. The wistfulness for a life of liberty and unrestricted movement will persist despite this.

The central theme here revolves around the yearning for recognition and admiration for one’s past wisdom, which necessitates a more lenient approach. The tendency to assume a dominant position based on presumed superiority and dynastic privilege does not bode well when fate offers us a more modest or subordinate role. The pivotal takeaway from this evolutionary phase is that those in our immediate vicinity, especially family members, have sensitivities that require nurturing and attention. Key factors to consider include a commitment to familial affection and accepting one’s and others’ weaknesses.

The individual who values the universality of views, a sense of brotherhood with mankind, the importance of fostering multiple friendships, and non-conformism may appear to possess an abundance of freedom. However, inevitably, someone must eventually assume the mantle of leadership, for no liberty is without cost, and sacrifice may be necessary. The outcome of this destiny involves relinquishing libertarian experiences to eventually arrive in golden solitude at the centre of the stage, where one can champion the right causes while avoiding the misuse of one’s power.

The attainment of a spiritual life is a remarkable accomplishment. The act of showing compassion towards the suffering of others is an ennobling experience that elevates one’s soul. An existence lived in the perception of other worlds and supernatural realities instils hope and provides reassurance that death is not the ultimate end. Further, having feelings of affinity towards others promotes charity. However, these pursuits would remain sterile if this expanded consciousness were not brought to the material plane. Destiny, in this regard, consists of utilizing one’s expanded conscience and compassionate nature to effect positive change in the real world through action and evidence-based approaches rather than solely relying on emotions. It involves dedicating oneself to a project that also benefits others.

Those with this particular configuration often exhibit the characteristics of a warrior or a leader who plunges headlong into the fray without apprehension for their safety. These individuals are inclined to be impulsive and, at times, choleric, unable to restrain their instincts, which can lead to difficulties and anxiety. The manifestation of jealousy is also a significant source of conflict for these individuals. The lessons they must learn, which fate will undoubtedly present, are cooperation, forbearance, and respect for others’ rights. Such lessons may be acquired through activities that mandate balance or law enforcement, training in compromise, or meditation practice.

The essence of this existence is often tied to concrete and material aspects, resulting in a natural inclination to accumulate possessions. Consequently, individuals may become entrenched in their conservative tendencies, prioritising safeguarding their possessions over genuine human connections. This possessiveness may jeopardise sincere human relationships by placing practical considerations at the forefront. To evolve, individuals must undergo a symbolic death of these attachments, accepting the possibility of significant losses and embarking on a journey of no return towards intrinsically rewarding experiences rather than being valued for their practical potential. These experiences may include endeavours dedicated to the common good, devoid of any expectation of personal gain.

Past occurrences refer to a constant fluctuation between vastly different interests, lacking the capacity to sustain focus on a specific or prioritised passion for any significant duration. Verbal communication, interpersonal connections, frequent movement among people and situations, casual or superficial relationships, and alternating activities all express the karmic inheritance adaptability. When fate beckons, a desire is aroused to equip oneself with an objective, to strive towards an ideal target with complete dedication towards a person or a cause. This marks a triumph over existential disorder, which may also lead to spiritual aspirations.

Here, the individual is challenged to resist the allure of a life of comfort and security. Such temptation originates from a privileged existential condition or an enveloping, exclusive maternal love, which, if not tackled, could lead to an inability to cope with life’s trials, seeking refuge within oneself. The inherent danger in the situation is evident, and the individual must strive to overcome it. Consequently, the individual’s destiny is to pursue independence and assume responsibility for their family or community. It is conceivable that ambition may motivate them to pursue lofty goals and create works with a substantial social or spiritual impact.

Developing a self-centred and exclusionary attitude can be beneficial when attempting to focus one’s attention on oneself. However, holding a preeminent position in life is not the only thing that matters. Such a position often leads to emotional detachment and isolation, resulting in a comfortable and secure existence bereft of spontaneity. As such, fate will lead one towards a course of action that prioritizes human brotherhood, social movements, and friendships. The experiences gained as a leader will be leveraged for the betterment of all. Transitioning from a personal stage to a global one will be the ultimate objective.

The quest for precision, meticulous scrutiny of details, and analytical attention to the task at hand enhance our organizational capabilities. However, the excessive need for control often leads to anxiety and concern due to the lack of perfection in everything. In such circumstances, destiny assumes a pivotal role in guiding us towards the pursuit of the significance of our actions, the greatness of seemingly insignificant deeds, and the universal consciousness underlying the apparent reality. This elevated sense of awareness provides a platform for seeking meaning in our actions and fostering an enlightened outlook.
The lunar nodes in the astrological Houses

In certain circumstances, individuals need to assume control of the decision-making process to prevent their partners or associates from making unilateral decisions. The underlying objective of this destiny is to foster the growth of an independent identity capable of managing relationships in both personal and professional domains, acknowledging advice while resisting unwarranted impositions. This principle is integral to developing a self-sufficient identity equipped to navigate the complexities of interpersonal relationships with skill and poise.
North node in 2nd House – South node in 8th House
The past is full of intricate and convoluted circumstances arising out of the insatiable desire to modify one’s surroundings in an obsessive and, at times, destructive manner. The inclination towards self-interest and the propensity to manipulate the possessions of others often reign supreme. Consequently, destiny endeavours to restore equilibrium by fostering the ability to handle goods and material objects that are conducive to collaboration, support, and beneficial to the collective good. Failure to adhere to this principle may result in a relapse into chaos.
North node in 3rd House – South node in 9th House
Engaging in philosophical inquiry and exploring exotic landscapes are worthy pursuits for personal growth and development. However, language development, exchange, and dialogue are essential to foster community prosperity. Philosophers and explorers alike acquire knowledge and enrich humanity by expressing their ideas and experiences. This reciprocity embodies the core principle of learning. This is the teaching for the future.
North node in 4th House – South node in 10th House
Many ambitions are centred around the glories and splendours of the past, as well as the yearning to attain a prominent status in the social context. However, neglecting the significance of the family, which encompasses not only a personal space but also a holy refuge for one’s innermost thoughts and potential, could lead to undue ego inflation. Therefore, fate necessitates delving deep into the intrinsic foundations that guarantee stability and even success, thereby leading to their rediscovery.
North node in 5th House – South node in 11th House
Aspirations, projects, and desires are the fundamental building blocks from which one can draw inspiration to bring one’s dreams to life. However, mere contemplation of what can be achieved is insufficient to realise it. It is crucial to imbue one’s work with the creativity that can only be generated by being independent of the thoughts of others and creating something new and unique in art, science, teaching, or even transmitting this creative light to one’s offspring.
North node in 6th House – South node in 12th House
The solitude and the desire to seek knowledge or evade uncomfortable realities by living an unstructured life may result in a “splendid seclusion” state. However, it is essential to acknowledge that imparting knowledge by serving others is one of the most effective ways to enhance one’s well-being and contribute positively to society. This realisation often arises from life’s experiences, teaching us the value of sharing our acquired knowledge with others. Therefore, embracing opportunities to serve others and using our wisdom to improve society is crucial.
North node in 7th House – South node in 1st House
The allure of an independent existence, with its accompanying freedoms of thought and movement, can be challenging to give up. However, eventually, the realisation dawns that a relationship with others is necessary for navigating life’s complexities. Establishing such a connection does not constitute a constraint but rather a means of achieving equilibrium within oneself and with others, bolstered by the strength accumulated through life’s experiences.
North node in 8th House – South node in 2nd House
“Money isn’t everything”, we say. Extending the concept to all material goods reveals that material possessions are sterile unless put to good use. The term “having” does not mean “possessing” but rather the ability to manage potential and transform it through action into a creation, work of art, or discovery in various fields of knowledge. The lesson to be learned by those who bear this destiny is the ability to convert the instinct for possession into real value.
North node in 9th House – South node in 3rd House
Engaging in diverse experiences and interpersonal interactions or intensive intellectual analysis is a commendable learning method. However, there comes a time when it becomes essential to broaden our perspectives, travel, comprehend the general principles underlying the specific, and be receptive to varying viewpoints that can provide us with a more philosophical or spiritual outlook on the world.
North node in 10th House – South node in 4th House
The family unit, although a solace from the turmoil of life, can sometimes encourage complacency and a lack of effort to improve or extend one’s relationships with society. To avoid exclusion and a shortage of recognition by others, it becomes necessary to overcome the apprehension of confronting the outside world and allow one’s internal talents to blossom. Fate may steer one towards a vocation or social obligation that enables one’s innate abilities to shine.
North node in 11th House – South node in 5th House
Developing one’s creative and cognitive abilities is undoubtedly a rewarding and enjoyable experience. However, one should be wary of the potential dangers of excessive indulgence in hedonistic personality traits. As such, the path towards creative expression should not simply be limited to personal satisfaction but should also serve as a means to inspire and motivate individuals to aspire towards higher goals. Such goals should benefit one’s community and foster strong bonds with friends and colleagues who may benefit from one’s talents.
North node in 12th House – South node in 6th House
Devoting oneself to practice, the systematic application of mental processes, and a steadfast commitment to precision and daily attention to one’s work can result in remarkable outcomes. Unfortunately, such dedication can instil a powerful critical sense towards anything that does not align with one’s principles. Consequently, fate may propel one towards uncovering the truth concealed in everyday experiences and the universal hidden within the particular.
Aspects of the lunar nodes with the planets
Several authors have examined the influence of planetary aspects on the south lunar node, positing they may serve as indicators of specific past life experiences. In contrast, those on the north node may offer insight into future life goals. However, it should be noted that this approach has limited utility in assessing the evolutionary potentials conveyed by the node axis, as discussed in the interpretation chapter. Nevertheless, we may still opt to interpret these aspects in a “karmic” sense, should we so choose.
The square aspects of the lunar nodes represent the existential circumstances that engender friction and difficulties in the pursuit of integrating the evolutionary dynamics that emanate from the south node towards the north node. Conversely, the trine aspect, along with its complementary sextile aspect, indicates the circumstances that promote this change. When the axis of the nodes aligns with a planetary opposition, the ensuing contrast may cause an extreme oscillation between the past and future, between what was and what should or will be. In such cases, the optimal evolutionary resolution involves integrating the opposing dynamics to stimulate collaboration, thereby facilitating the realisation of one’s destiny.
Only the conjunction aspect is examined in the following tables, the most important of those mentioned. The tolerance orbit of the aspects should not exceed five degrees.
Conjunction aspects with the south lunar node
Sun
The Sun symbolises an influential figure from one’s past or childhood, which serves as a guiding light to steer the individual towards their desired future path. In the case of critical aspects, this symbol may indicate authoritarian tendencies on the part of an individual.
Moon
The reference figure, which catalyses evolutionary progress, is typically female. Alternatively, an advantageous environmental and familial context can provide the necessary impetus for forward momentum, provided that no critical impediments hinder the abandonment of past practices.
Mercury
The opportunity for interpersonal exchanges and communication, even amongst kin, may facilitate personal growth and development. However, in critical aspects, instances of immaturity or personality imbalances may impede or slow down this process of self-improvement.
Venus
The innate ability to attract people favours meetings that facilitate evolutionary progress. However, in the case of critical aspects, this attraction can become a double-edged sword, inciting sentiments of disappointment amongst partners.
Mars
The vital energy at the service of a noble purpose and the inherent desire to ascend are traits that can overcome any obstacles. Albeit, it is essential to note that a few negative aspects can result in aggressive behaviour that may be disrespectful of the circumstances.
Jupiter
Philosophy and religion, alongside exploratory journeys, exert a significant influence on evolutionary progress. However, in the case of critical aspects, individuals tend to follow false ideologies or rely on doctrines that are inadequately understood.
Saturn
Saturn, metaphorically, is akin to an “old soul” that possesses a wealth of knowledge and wisdom, which renders it challenging to assimilate into the mundane world and, consequently, leads to a demanding fate. Critical aspects indicate an evolutionary journey that entails overcoming various trials and tribulations.
Uranus
The process of evolution follows a unique and seldom-taken path, marked by ingenuity and exceptional predictive aptitude. However, overemphasising non-conformity can undermine the intended trajectory of progress.
Neptune
The course of evolution is marked by the progression through affinities, understanding, and immersion in universal psychism, which endows the priceless gift of a collaborative and compassionate spirit. However, critical aspects denote a lack of directionality and a prevalence of erroneous views.
Pluto
The ability to leverage circumstances in one’s favour and utilise intuition to determine the optimal evolutionary path represents a significant asset besides one’s charisma. In the case of negative aspects, detrimental energies may take over, leading to destructive outcomes.
Conjunction aspects with the north lunar node
Sun
The presence of a guide, be it human or ideal, serves as a beacon that illuminates the path towards one’s fulfilment. However, when it comes to critical aspects, it is imperative to exercise caution and remain vigilant of false prophets or circumstances that may incite self-serving thoughts.
Moon
The course of one’s life is guided towards certain activities that involve many individuals, such as a career in politics or social work. However, the inherent risk of exploitation may arise in one’s pursuit of success and the support of others in case of negative aspects.
Mercury
The ability to articulate ideas and communicate effectively is a hallmark of evolutionary progress. However, instances of misinterpretation or incomplete development of discursive abilities can arise with critical aspects.
Venus
The evolutionary path is characterised by its emphasis on harmony, collaboration, and the expression of love in all its manifestations. However, in cases marked by critical aspects, the inability to reach agreements is often a result of indulgence in hedonistic attitudes.
Mars
Rapid and unidirectional evolution can be achieved by investing energy and making important decisions. However, it is essential to note that, in the case of critical aspects, excessively forceful actions can lead to the depletion of one’s potential.
Jupiter
Pursuing religiosity and adopting organised forms of faith and philosophy as a way of life are primary evolutionary stimuli. However, with critical aspects, the prestige and wealth associated with one’s position can impede genuine fulfilment.
Saturn
It is a destiny that can reach sublime heights in the academic field or the search for a high spirituality. In negative cases, the excess of critical thinking towards those who do not conform to one’s standards can lead to enquiring excesses.
Uranus
The drive towards innovation, technical expertise, and the pursuit of original and unconventional paths can lead to new representation models and, ultimately, to evolution. However, with critical aspects, this pursuit of originality can transition into a quest for utopian ideals.
Neptune
In the context of evolution, the mystical dimension takes precedence, characterised by pursuing universal ideals or expressing such ideals through art and humanitarianism. In a negative sense, this dimension can be associated with the predominance of mediumistic states and fictitious realities.
Pluto
Destiny harbours an intense creative instinct capable of transforming old realities into innovative and effective solutions. However, when this creative impulse encounters obstacles, a critical aspect of the process emerges, leading to a tendency to eliminate whatever stands in the way of the desired outcome.
[1] Precession is a phenomenon that occurs in rotating bodies, characterised by a change in the orientation of the rotational axis. In astronomy, precession refers to slow, gradual changes in a planet’s orbital or rotational parameters. Notable examples of precessional motion include the precession of the equinoxes and the movement of the lunar nodes, which are caused by periodic variations of the lunar orbit concerning the Earth’s equator.
[2] The Purāṇas, meaning “the old” or “the elderly,” comprise a series of literary texts that cover a wide range of subjects, including cosmogony, cosmology, genealogies, medicine, and grammar. These texts take an encyclopaedic form and incorporate a vast symbolic background. Legend has it that the narrator of the Mahābhārata, Vyasa, was the initial compiler of the Purāṇas.
