Wings of Freedom

Uranus spends approximately seven years in each zodiac sign, nearly three times longer than the preceding Saturnian cycle, completing its journey through the entire zodiac in 84 years. This extended transit and its symbolic representation of dynamism and independence make Uranus an apt symbol for the cultural and global reforms it champions. Each Uranian generation exerts an evolutionary and revolutionary influence on ideas, thereby impacting the prevailing social structure to some degree, as determined by the specific zodiacal context through which the planet transits.

Some observations are necessary on the modes of action of slow planets, including Uranus. Upon entering a zodiac sign, a slow planet assumes a distinct colour provided by the zodiac sign. Over subsequent years, this specific impression, alongside its interactions with other slow planets, contributes to shaping collective human events rooted in the planet’s symbolic representation.

The influence of Uranus extends to the individual, particularly during crucial developmental stages. This influence is marked by a generational wave, a period during which one attains the maturity and independence necessary to impact society significantly. In the context of Uranus, this phase typically occurs during the formation of the first hemicycle of Saturn in the birth chart, around 14-15 years of age, and subsequently after the first Saturn cycle, at around 29-30 years of age. The onset of adolescence, characterised by instinctive upheavals when facing the adult world for the first time, catalyses Uranian rebellion against existing social norms, often prompting radical shifts in attitudes. Furthermore, Saturn’s opposition to itself signifies the endeavour to break free from the established social order. As individuals mature, Uranus’ influence tends to become less revolutionary in the stimuli it offers.

Two opposing inclinations correspond to this evolutionary phase: the persistence of rejecting traditional norms, leading to unconventional attitudes in an effort to break free from old social standards, or the individual serves as a focal point that transforms an existing societal state through the power of new ideas.

In mundane astrology, considering the interplay between slow-moving planets is essential. Understanding the historical and social implications associated with the transit of a slow planet necessitates examining the entry of other slow planets into the signs and the mutual aspects between them. However, for the purpose of clarity, this exposition will focus on listing the most symbolically relevant facts about Uranus’ presence in the zodiac sign.

Uranus in Aries

From 1927 to 1934 – from 2011 to 2018

With Uranus in Aries, there is a heightened emphasis on self-determination. This combination exemplifies the force with which new ideas are introduced into the social sphere. Decisions are not the product of careful consideration but rather stem from an instinct to revolutionise collective perspectives, often without due regard for the potential negative consequences of such hasty actions. This concept extends to scientific advancements and their applications, where the possible adverse effects are often underestimated. Consequently, the social landscape is influenced by a rush for outcomes, often with a narrow and one-sided focus.

The historical past of this combination takes us back to the economic downturn that marked the era of the American Great Depression, the initial surges of the women’s rights movement, the collectivisation of agricultural produce in Russia, which led to widespread famine and the loss of nine million lives, and the preliminary political upheavals that foreshadowed the Second World War, notably the rise to power of Adolf Hitler in 1933. In more recent times, there has been a rapid upsurge in economic globalisation, which, in turn, has sparked crises and internal conflicts in the Arab world, giving rise to the widespread Arab Spring movement. Furthermore, the advancements in information technology have facilitated the proliferation of mobile devices and the expansion of social networks. Concerns surrounding global warming are beginning to permeate public opinion.

Uranus in Taurus

From 1935 to 1942 – from 2019 to 2026

The position of Uranus in Taurus disrupts established certainties and indulgent pleasures, compelling a departure from traditional acquisitions and driving engagement with the environment through innovative tools. This position fosters proactive behaviour, stimulating technical discoveries that hold practical value. At a societal level, there is a risk of adverse impacts from the exploitation and overconsumption of resources driven by the profit-oriented use of new technologies. Conversely, judicious implementation of new cultivation methods can boost yields while maintaining environmental sustainability.

The most salient events of the historical past were undoubtedly the numerous territorial invasions that prepared the advent of the Second World War, including the annexation of Abyssinia and Ethiopia to Italy by Benito Mussolini, the Japanese invasion of China and the conquest of Poland by the Nazi army. This act officially begins the Second World War in Europe. In 1941, the USA, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, joined the war. The current seven-year period concerning the Uranian position has seen the worsening of economic conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the exponential increase in environmental crises due to atmospheric phenomena, without forgetting the current invasion wars. Also noteworthy are the powerful earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria in 2023.

Uranus in Gemini

From 1943 to 1949

In the astrological sign of Gemini, Uranus creates an environment conducive to disseminating ideas and intuitions, particularly fostering a period of scientific discovery. This placement amplifies the significance of interpersonal communication, notably through technological mediums, such as virtual reality, complemented by artificial intelligence. Given the dual nature of the sign, a shift towards relationships mediated by avatars may become increasingly prevalent. At an individual level, this configuration tends to stimulate heightened mental activity, thereby nurturing the emergence of innovative personalities.

During this historical period, agreements were formed between pivotal world leaders, including Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin, to initiate operations aimed at liberating Europe from Nazi rule. The suicide of Adolf Hitler and the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan marked the end of the Second World War. Notable developments during this time included establishing supranational organizations such as the CIA, NATO, the WHO, the Russian COMECON, and the ERP (better known as the Marshall Plan). Technological advancements, including the invention of the transistor and microwave oven, were also significant. We see the breaking into duplicity characteristic of this configuration represented in the geopolitical reality by the partition of India and Pakistan, the division of Korea into North and South Korea, the relocation of the Republic of China to Taiwan following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, and the formation of East Germany.

Uranus in Cancer

From 1949 to 1956

Uranus in Cancer fosters the emergence of a generation that embraces novel ideologies infused with emotional depth. This inclination places a significant emphasis on communication, characterised by sensitivity, dreams, and imagination, consequently prompting a new approach to interpersonal relationships. However, this ideological shift may give rise to a romantic zeal disconnected from practicality, rooted in a whimsical perspective, and detached from real-world considerations. On an individual level, this placement notably unleashes internal aspirations, marking the genesis of the generation that propelled psychedelic movements, student uprisings, and the evolution of musical patterns.

Several historical phenomena closely resemble the Uranian symbolism in Cancer during the period under consideration. These include the surge in population following post-war reconstruction, leading to the rise of the baby boomer generation; the flourishing era of television and the subsequent surge in mass consumption; the commencement of the Vietnam War in 1955, which greatly fuelled the youth uprisings in the ensuing decades; the emergence of popular music and rock and roll, alongside the rise of new genres of jazz such as bebop; the revival of cinema, particularly in Europe; in the realms of art and painting, abstract expressionism and later, pop art, gained prominence, echoing a figurative language drawn from mass culture; and the world of fashion began reflecting style icons that embodied youthful rebellion against conservatism.

Uranus in Leo

From 1956 to 1962

The placement of Uranus in its Exile in Leo directs personal energies towards self-renewal, potentially leading to individuals prioritising self-centred pursuits over contributing to broader communal interests. These individuals may opportunistically capitalise on sudden changes or live extravagantly and eccentrically. This self-centred focus tends to foster conditions favouring large-scale enterprises, capitalist risk-taking, and the creation of collective movements motivated by selfishness within the social sphere. On a positive note, it can also intensify efforts to advocate for the rights of marginalised communities.

During the reference period, several geopolitical conflicts emerged with the intent to attain political and power dominance. These included the Suez Crisis of 1956, the Hungarian revolution against the Soviet regime in the same year, and the Cuban revolution, resulting in Fidel Castro’s victory in 1959. Additionally, significant events such as the coup in Pakistan in 1958, the decolonisation of the French and British colonial empires, the detonation of the first French atomic bomb in 1960, the construction of the Berlin Wall by the East German government in 1961, and the Cuban Crisis in 1962 took place. On the social front, this period witnessed the first boycott of racial segregation in the USA, with activist Rosa Parks playing a prominent role.

Uranus in Virgo

From 1962 to 1968

According to certain astrologers 1, Uranus is considered exalted in the sign of Virgo, although prevailing views tend to associate its exaltation with Scorpio. Be that as it may, this planetary position significantly encourages the practical application of scientific concepts and advancements. On a societal level, it appears to direct collective inclinations towards reformist agendas: innovations in social structures are welcomed, provided they adhere to contextual constraints and possess a logical and pragmatic framework. Individuals born under this Uranian influence tend to assert themselves in advancing technological innovations and channel their libertarian impulses in a regulated manner within existing social frameworks.

The 1960s marked a significant cultural revolution that extended from the United States to Europe through the 1970s. This period brought about an unconventional approach to social norms, the relaxation of taboos, and the rise of music and pop culture. The concurrent transit of Pluto in this astrological sign and the coming of age of the Uranus generation in Cancer signify this phenomenon. Essentially, Pluto stimulated radical changes associated with Uranus, which were integrated into a Virgo-oriented context geared towards assimilating and rationalising innovations. Notably, the first political revolts emerged towards the end of this era.

In examining historical and social events connected to the symbolism of Uranus in the astrological sign, significant occurrences emerge. The Chinese Cultural Revolution, initiated by Mao Zedong in 1966, sought to homogenise society by modelling it after the working class. During this period, we have also witnessed a surge in mass movements aligned with socialist and communist ideologies, particularly notable in France and Italy. On the opposite side, the 1964 coup in Brazil led to a prolonged military dictatorship lasting 21 years, while the 1967 coup in Greece resulted in a seven-year dictatorship under a group of colonels.

Furthermore, in scientific advancement, the era saw the inception of space exploration marked by the launch of Russian probes and the American Apollo 8 mission, the first human-crewed mission to orbit the Moon. Medical history was also defined by Christiaan Barnard’s groundbreaking execution of the first heart transplant. Noteworthy technological achievements encompass the creation of the BASIC programming language, the first supercomputer, and the precursor to the Internet, ARPANET. Additionally, in 1967, colour television made its debut in Europe.

Uranus in Libra

From 1969 to 1975

Uranus in Libra increases the role of decision-making with a foundation in justice and fairness, distinct from the influence of the opposite sign, Aries. Unlike the instinct-driven action in Aries, which can be somewhat oblivious to circumstances, the influence of Uranus in Libra leans towards engaging in conflict grounded in moral and egalitarian obligations. In the societal context, it signifies the emergence of a generation inclined to combat with an often-unwavering belief in their righteousness, which may lead to heightened conflicts with established authority. Individuals with this planetary alignment typically possess strong reflex coordination and a predisposition towards activities that cater to their artistic and aesthetic sensibilities.

The Uranian symbolism of these seven years manifests itself in the sociopolitical realm by establishing influential blocs among major global players. This precarious endeavour seeks to strike a balance between diverse military alliances. On one side are the Western coalitions, with the USA, Europe, Japan, and Commonwealth countries primarily led by NATO. On the other side, we find Russia, China, Cuba, and the Horn of Africa within the Warsaw Pact. The non-aligned countries encompass South America, India, parts of Southeast Asia, and most of the African continent. Even the conclusion of the Vietnam War, marked by the fall of Saigon in 1975, appears to have some connection with this Uranian transit.

Uranus in Scorpio

From 1975 to 1981

The exaltation of Uranus in the sign of Scorpio emphasises Uranian explosive potential, highlighting its “surgical” effectiveness capable of inducing radical and profound societal and political transformations. Individuals under this configuration display resilience in confronting challenges and embracing the inherent risks associated with advocating new ideological paradigms or pursuing personal aspirations, relying on the strength of their convictions to navigate their path. From a social standpoint, their aptitude for addressing communal issues using unorthodox approaches clashes with the other side of the coin, the unscrupulous imposition of ideas and the resulting conflict.

During these seven years, numerous notable conflicts occurred worldwide. These conflicts included the Indian emergency declared by Indira Gandhi in 1975, the Lebanese civil war, the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge, various conflicts in Africa, the Iranian revolution in 1979 resulting in the ascent of Ayatollah Khomeini, the Soviet-Afghan war, and several coups d’état in countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Argentina. Additionally, this period saw the emergence of terrorist movements such as the Red Brigades, which was responsible for the assassination of Aldo Moro in 1978, as well as attacks carried out by groups like the Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari in Bologna (1980) and the Baader-Meinhof brigade in Germany.

In the scientific realm, significant discoveries enhanced our understanding of solid-state physics and greatly aided the development of personal computing (e.g., Apple II, Commodore, Atari). In 1979, Bill Gates developed the first operating system for IBM computers, marking a pivotal moment in the history of computing. Moreover, in biological studies, the first bacterial genome was successfully sequenced.

Uranus in Sagittarius

From 1982 to 1988

This generation is tasked with constructing the framework for new concepts of human unity. That entails the need for scientific, ethical, religious, and philosophical aspects to adapt to evolving social and material circumstances. To achieve this integration, it is imperative to transcend old customs and adjust them to the present era. Individually, this position fosters a strong inclination for exploration in both geographical and philosophical contexts. Its impact is evident in establishing novel social structures and developing concepts and behavioural paradigms that drive future societal arrangements and advancements for humanity.

It is interesting to note the influence of Uranus on economic restructuring during the 1980s, which led to production delocalisation based on globalisation. Simultaneously, on the political side, the end of the Cold War and the rise of Mikhail Gorbachev marked a significant political shift towards economic liberalisation and increased trade with Western countries. Canada, Australia, and New Zealand formally declared independence from the British Commonwealth during this period. The exponential growth of the world population surpassed all previous periods during the 1980s. Additionally, the introduction of personal computers sparked the development of computer networks, primarily in commercial and academic sectors (USENET, Fidonet, and BBS). The widespread adoption of television notably expanded in Asian countries.

Uranus in Capricorn

From 1989 to 1995

The transit of Uranus through its nocturnal domicile significantly influences social structures, leading to the necessity to establish new orders that challenge established constraints and paradigms, often resulting in abrupt consequences. This process paves the way for pursuing real or perceived freedom while striving to reconcile freedom with necessity. Historically, Uranus in Capricorn has been associated with disrupting traditional global balances through wars and reconciliations. On an individual level, this positioning promotes the practical and steadfast implementation of progressive ideas, at times in a resolute manner. It characterises a generation that seeks to reform existing creations rather than generate entirely new ones.

During these seven years, several communist-led governments were either overthrown or faced attempted dethronement. These events included the Hungarian Revolution, the Tiananmen Square protests in China, the “Velvet Revolution” in Czechoslovakia, the violent uprising preceding the fall of Ceausescu in Romania, and the subsequent end of his regime. Notable historical-political occurrences encompassed the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, leading to the reunification of Germany; the dissolution of the USSR in 1991; the US-led Operation Desert Storm in response to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait under Saddam Hussein’s regime; the Yugoslav Wars following the secession of Croatia and Slovenia, along with the ensuing conflicts between Croatia and Serbia.

Furthermore, significant advancements in technology and science were witnessed, including the increase of digital and communication technologies derived from prior research, such as the personal computer, the World Wide Web, mobile telephony, the introduction of the first Pentium microprocessor, the development of the compact disc, and Microsoft’s release of its first graphical operating system, Windows 3.1.

Uranus in Aquarius

From 1996 to 2003

The positioning of Uranus in its diurnal domicile gives valuable insights into the upcoming generation expected to reach maturity between 2025 and 2030. During this period, the planet’s innovative and revolutionary attributes allow for a demonstration of collective conduct driven by inspiration, capable of resonating with high ideals, or at least perceived as such. This era is anticipated to witness the rise of movements focusing on the ethical aspects of political, economic, and ecological development, extending beyond material well-being. Individuals with Uranus in Aquarius are likely to seek not only the apparent meanings of things but also the subtle ones, often employing unconventional methods in their pursuit. The social consequences of this phenomenon are evident in the quest for supranational solutions to global challenges, aligning with the expressions mentioned above.

During this period, a significant aspect of note is the emergence of a multicultural mindset, the proliferation of alternative media, the rise of new musical and artistic movements, and an exponential increase in internet usage. Economically, there was a surge in anti-globalisation demonstrations against neoliberal policies, as well as the introduction of the euro, the unified currency of the European Union. In the realm of information technology, the first iMac was launched, marking the advent of a fresh line of computers that embraced an innovative approach in contrast to traditional technologies. Predecessors to Facebook, the early social network forms, started gaining traction. Google, a tech giant, was established in 1998. The simultaneous influence of Neptune in Aquarius occasionally added a tumultuous dimension to Uranian activities. It is essential to acknowledge pivotal events that prompted the United States military involvement abroad, such as the 2001 Twin Towers attack and the subsequent Afghan war, as well as the trial of Saddam Hussein by the International Court of Justice, which ultimately led to the Second Gulf War in 2003.

Uranus in Pisces

From 2004 to 2010

The positioning of Uranus in the sign of Pisces lends a somewhat dreamy quality to the planet’s innovative drive, characterised by emotional and universalistic responses. This configuration reflects the archetype of a visionary leader capable of galvanising others toward a noble cause without a clear sight of the outcome. The generation born during this period will likely influence the community around 2035, embodying a Christ-like ideal or riding the wave of sentiment without crystallising precise directions for renewal.

From a societal perspective, this phase under Uranus’ influence is marked by unfulfilled social expectations and events that, while introducing novelties, engender confusion and dispersion without delivering the desired outcomes.

Historically, the period is dominated by two opposite economic waves. On the one hand, the impetuous growth of China and India as economic powers; on the other, towards the end of the seven years, the credit and real estate crisis led to the spread, initially in the USA and then in most of the industrialised world, to a financial crisis which produced a global recession. We also see the beginning of the end of traditional postal systems in favour of email and the great spread of the internet and primary IT companies (Google, YouTube, Wikipedia, etc.). We cannot forget the most significant natural disaster linked to the symbolism of water, the earthquake off the island of Sumatra, which generated a massive tsunami wave that hit all of Southeast Asia and India, causing almost 300,000 deaths. And again, Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans, and the earthquakes in Kashmir and southeast China, which caused tens of thousands of deaths.

During this period, two opposing economic trends prevailed. On one hand, China and India were rapidly growing as formidable economic forces. On the other hand, the latter part of these seven years saw the emergence of a credit and real estate crisis, initially affecting the USA and subsequently spreading to most industrialised nations, leading to a global recession. This era also marked the decline of traditional postal systems in favour of electronic mail, along with the widespread adoption of the Internet and the rise of major IT companies such as Google, YouTube, and Wikipedia.

We cannot forget the most significant natural disaster linked to the symbolism of water: The devastating earthquake off the coast of Sumatra created a massive tsunami that struck Southeast Asia and India, resulting in nearly 300,000 casualties. Additionally, Hurricane Katrina had a catastrophic impact on New Orleans, while earthquakes in Kashmir and southeastern China claimed tens of thousands of lives. These events had a profound global impact.
